President Donald Trump was singing Kimberly Guilfoyle’s praises just six months ago, declaring her “the greatest” in a gushing public endorsement — a far cry from his attempt to distance himself from the former U.S. ambassador to Greece on Tuesday.

A bombshell report from The Wall Street Journal recently alleged that Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s former fiancée, begged former Trump donor EricDeters for $100,000 to pay off her American Express bill in exchange for political influence.

Follow-up reporting from the Journal revealed that the former U.S. ambassador had also allegedly bragged about “her close ties to two Greek tycoons,” adding that “they were bankrolling her high-rolling trips around the world.”

Earlier Tuesday, newly appointed White House Press Secretary Katie Zachariarevealed Trump had requested Guilfoyle’s resignation, after reports suggested the ambassador was on thin ice. Guilfoyle complied, while continuing to deny all allegations against her.

After the announcement, ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott noted to the president, “She was almost a member of your family.” Guilfoyle and Trump’s eldest son began dating in 2018, confirmed their engagement in 2022, and ultimately split in 2024 after six years together.

“No, she wasn’t a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” Trump claimed. “But she went to Greece; she was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading.”

And when the Journal’s reporting first broke, the president offered members of the press, “I just heard about it. It’s too bad. I mean, I don’t know. She’s, she’s an ambassador. Uh, I just heard a little bit about it. I don’t know too much, but she was always very nice.”

But a resurfaced clip from March 2026, shared on social media by MeidasTouch’s Acyn Torabi, shows Trump enthusiastically praising Guilfoyle, suggesting a far warmer relationship than his recent remarks indicate.

His words came during a Greek Independence Day Celebration on March 26. The president called the former U.S. ambassador “a person I know very, very well” and “an inspiration to a lot of people, especially if you happen to be Greek,” dubbing her “Kimberlay.”

“Kimberly Guilfoyle has been my friend for a long time. I love calling her Kimberlay,” Trump continued. “That’s my little pet name, right? But you are the greatest. And I heard they love you over there. I hope you come back here in 12 years or whenever the term ends.”

And at the same event in 2025, according to a transcript posted by Roll Call, the president called her a “great friend for a long time,” emphasizing that she “loves our country” and is “really a good person.”

Not to mention, his Truth Social post to commemorate her appointment in 2024 read in full:

Today, I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Kimberly Guilfoyle as the United States Ambassador to Greece. For many years, Kimberly has been a close friend and ally. Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States, and safeguard its interests abroad.

Kimberly is perfectly suited to foster strong bilateral relations with Greece, advancing our interests on issues ranging from defense cooperation to trade and economic innovation.

Lastly, 2020 reporting from The Daily Beast claimed that Trump privately gushed over Guilfoyle’s widely-mocked speech at the Republican National Convention, reportedly calling her “my Kimberly” and comparing her to former Argentine first lady Eva Perón. According to two sources familiar with their phone conversation, the president called her speech “fantastic” and “so amazing,” telling Guilfoyle that “nobody could have done that but you.”

And according to one senior Trump official, added the Beast, he even joked that the address was “better than Don’s.”
