Will Forte discusses his character's Thanksgiving meltdown in The Four Seasons

Forte's Jack punts a cooked turkey in the second season, as he tells PEOPLE the holiday meal was indeed real

"Somehow we rehearsed it enough that I was able to do it, I believe, on the first take," he says

Will Forte's scene-stealing moment in The Four Seasons wasn't all gravy, but it did involve a real turkey.

The series star, who returned for the comedy's second season on Netflix, tells PEOPLE that his villain moment of the season — in which his character, Jack, punts the friend group's Thanksgiving turkey across a lawn — was done in one take and with a real Thanksgiving feast.

In episode 5, "Big Thanksgiving," Jack has a full-blown meltdown over friendship dynamics (and his continued miscommunication with his wife, Tina Fey's Kate), when he confronts Colman Domingo's Danny in the middle of their holiday meal.

While Danny tells him to take a "deep breath," Jack does the opposite — grabbing the prepared turkey, storming outside and kicking it in front of everyone. The ordeal finds him falling down some front steps and busting his foot, which could impact his marathon training.

"That was a real turkey," Forte, 55, says. "That specific shot, there are cameras everywhere because you don't know how many takes you get and you're hoping that you're going to get it in one because you got to do a bunch of cleaning up and there's also a stunt element. So it's a lot of pressure to feel, but at the same time, it was so fun to get to kick a turkey. And somehow we rehearsed it enough that I was able to do it, I believe, on the first take."

"When would I ever have a chance to kick a turkey?" he asks, joking, "But my foot did smell for like a week, because I don't shower."

Forte's costars Marco Calvani (Claude) and Erika Henningsen (Ginny) also got a kick out of the fictional blow-up, with Henningsen telling PEOPLE that Forte "really has to bear the brunt" of the physical comedy this season.

"Right before he kicks the turkey, I remember when he comes from the bedroom, all angry at Danny, and we're all sitting down," Calvani adds. "And that, for me, was really hysterical to watch."

Season 2 of The Four Seasons follows the tragic ending of the show's first installment, when the death of Steve Carell's Nick left the friend group in mourning. With Jack missing his best friend and Ginny facing the reality of raising their child without Nick, the new batch of episodes explore what life is like on the other side for the crew. In addition to Fey, Forte, Calvani, Domingo and Henningsen, the ensemble cast also features Kerri Kenney-Silver as Anne.

"I think what's super fun about this season is in season 1, things are happening to people, and they're responding to it and just trying to respond to stimulus. In this season, all the characters really decide to do something," Henningsen explains.

"They decide to do big things. They take these massive swings because that's what happens when somebody passes away. It was so fun to watch this cast and how the characters deepened when they make those choices."

Calvani adds, "They feel they have to change into a better version of themselves before it's too late, 'We can die in a car accident right now. And so what was my life? Why am I here? What is the meaning? What is the worth of it all? And am I supposed to leave something behind?' If that something is as a form of a child, that this is also something that Danny and Claude are asking themselves... What a treat it was to discover these characters even more."

The Four Seasons is now streaming on Netflix.
