The Housemaid’s Secret is currently in production for a 2027 release.

Paul Feig is returning to direct the sequel, based on Freida McFadden’s 2023 follow-up novel.

Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are reprising their roles, with Kirsten Dunst among the new cast members.

The Housemaid is returning in 2027 for another dose of twisted domestic thrills.

Following the massive success of the 2025 film, which has since found renewed popularity on streaming, Lionsgate announced plans for a sequel, now scheduled for release in 2027. Based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s best-selling trilogy, The Housemaid’s Secret is currently in production, with Sydney Sweeney returning to reprise her role as Millie Calloway in the next chapter of the delightfully deranged saga.

Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid follows Millie as she takes a new job working as a live-in housekeeper and nanny for Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) and her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), a wealthy couple whose seemingly ideal life is harboring dark secrets. The end of the film sets up a potential sequel, with Millie arriving at the home of another wealthy woman who’s in need of her special expertise.

With production underway, here’s everything we know about The Housemaid’s Secret, including what it’s about and who’s joining Sweeney for the next chapter.

Yes! In January 2026, Lionsgate officially announced that it was developing a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, based on the second book in McFadden’s trilogy. Rebecca Sonnenshine, who wrote the first film, is returning to adapt the sequel.

“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement. “The Housemaid’s Secret is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”

Feig added, “It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.”

Before the first film hit theaters, Entertainment Weekly asked Sweeney and Seyfried if they would be open to starring in a sequel. “I think that we’ll just have to wait and see,” Sweeney said. “I hope that the audience loves the movies just like we love the books, and we can continue to hopefully share that love within more of the films.”

As for Seyfried, her character Nina completes her arc in the first film, but she’s definitely open to returning. “Oh yeah, absolutely [I’d do more films],” she said. “Listen, if it doesn’t do well, you can call it off, but if it does, well, it’s absolutely a franchise. I didn’t sign on for anything but this one because my story ends, but they know that if they make another one, I’ll be a part of it, because I had so much fun with Paul [Feig, director].”

At the end of The Housemaid, Millie successfully helps Nina escape her pathologically abusive husband by killing him and helping stage his death as an accident. In return, Nina gives Millie $100,000 (a well-deserved bonus) and recommends her to a friend who is also dealing with an abusive spouse, setting the stage for a sequel.

Lionsgate’s official synopsis reads, “In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see, only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.”

That description aligns with the plot of McFadden’s own sequel, which follows Millie as she accepts a new job cleaning for Douglas Garrick, a wealthy tech CEO — as if you needed a bigger red flag.

Millie has yet to see Douglas’ wife, Wendy, who he claims is suffering from a mysterious illness that requires her to remain isolated in her own room. Written from Millie’s perspective, this is how the official synopsis for the book lays it out: “But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything...”

It continues, “That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe. Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go...”

The Housemaid’s Secret is set for release on Dec. 17, 2027. That’s almost exactly two years after the first film, which was released on Dec. 19, 2025.

Sweeney isn’t the only star reprising her role from the first film: Michele Morrone, who played the Winchesters’ hunky landscaper Enzo, is also returning for the sequel. Seyfried hasn’t been announced for The Housemaid’s Secret, though she has expressed interest in making a cameo. The sequel has also recruited some pretty exciting names, including Brittany Snow and Kirsten Dunst.

In March 2026, Kirsten Dunst joined the cast as Wendy Garrick, the elusive — and probably extremely endangered — wife of Douglas. “It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst,” Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement, in which she also correctly referred to Dunst as “an icon.”

The Housemaid’s official social media account subsequently revealed the casting of Paul Anthony Kelly (Love Story’s JFK Jr.) as Douglas and Stephen Kalyn (Off Campus) as Millie’s new lawyer boyfriend Brock. Brittany Snow (The Hunting Wives) will play Marybeth — a character we can’t really describe without spoiling things.
