Marshals opened with a shocking loss.
In season 1, episode 1, viewers learn that Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is grieving the death of his wife, Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), leaving him to raise their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), on his own.
It’s briefly explained that Monica died of cancer — an illness believed to be linked to toxic waste dumped by a nearby mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. Her death is one of several tied to the contamination, deepening the community’s grief and emerging as one of Marshals’ central storylines.
Asbille has not publicly commented on her absence from the Yellowstone spinoff, though Grimes told TV Insider that he reached out to her personally to discuss the creative direction for her character.
“I worked up the courage to call. I didn’t know how she was going to feel about it,” he said. “We had a great conversation. In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous and awesome. She’s going to work. That’s not an issue.”
Here’s everything to know about the decision to kill off Kelsey Asbille’s character, Monica, and how it reshapes the world of Marshals.

Asbille was unavailable to participate in Marshals, prompting creators Taylor Sheridan and Spencer Hudnut to determine a path forward for her character, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“It wasn’t like Luke [Grimes] and I were sitting there saying, ‘We should kill Monica,’ ” Hudnut told the outlet in March 2026. “It was more like, ‘If she’s not available for this, then what’s the best way to move on from that character in the least exploitive way?’ ”

When shaping Monica’s fate, Hudnut said the goal was to honor the character and ensure her death carried weight.
“She passes because of cancer. Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them," he told TV Insider in March 2026. “We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue. We wanted to be very respectful of that character.”
Monica’s absence also propels Kayce and Tate’s relationship into new territory — in ways it likely wouldn’t have evolved had she survived.
“Kayce saw himself as the protector and provider, and Monica as the real parent. Because of his background, he doesn’t trust himself as a parent to some degree," Hudnut added. "The first half of the season, Tate is having to drag his father into the reality that Monica is gone. There is this interesting dynamic where the son is really teaching the father.”

In March 2026, Grimes told Entertainment Weekly that he was “not at all expecting” to hear Sheridan and Hudnut’s dramatic twist for Marshals.
“I was incredibly bummed because Kelsey’s one of my really good friends and the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with. We’re really close, and for a while I couldn’t imagine doing it without her,” Grimes recalled. “I was like, ‘That doesn’t even make sense. Kayce and Monica are the same thing. They’re one.’ ”
Still, he came to understand how Monica’s death would shape Kayce’s arc moving forward.
“A person in that kind of pain could do anything,” Grimes added. “There’s something very volatile and very kinetic about that. So at the same time, I did think it was a good idea, even though it was heartbreaking.”
