Singer Maren Morris and a writer for Saturday Night Live (SNL) have mocked a joke by comedian Shane Gillis about women’s gym clothing, as public figures split over his opening monologue. Gillis hosted the NBC sketch show on October 10. He told the audience that women at the gym “dress like wh—s now”, then added: “Look, I’m sorry there’s no other way to describe it.” Celebrities began responding online within days.

Maren Morris and SNL’s Jo Sunday share posts after Shane Gillis’ joke

Morris replied on October 12 with an Instagram video. She smiled at the camera, then raised a middle finger. On-screen text read: “me being a wh— at the gym.” Her caption said: “Leave my gym short wedgie out of it.”

She set the clip to one of her own tracks from 2025. Jo Sunday, a writer on the programme, put a photo of herself on her Instagram story. She captioned it: “off i go to gym wh— vibes lol”. Furthermore, Ego Nwodim, a former cast member, posted a gym selfie to her story with the words “Wh— reporting for duty.” She later shared a picture of her post-workout meal, writing: “Getting my 30 grams of protein in after heauxing.”

Actor Dan Levy responded in a more serious tone. In an Instagram video, he said short shorts do not make women “wh—-”, but make the men who use the word misogynists. He called on more men to speak out and said complacency had helped create an environment in which women face sexual assault.

Levy also referred to the Cornell 7 case, which involves an alleged gang rape in 2024 by seven fraternity members at Cornell University. The case has caused national outrage. “Men need to be defending women more,” he said.

This was Gillis’ third time as host. He has often brought contentious stand-up material to the stage. In 2024, his debut monologue included a joke about relatives with Down syndrome. In 2019, the show hired him as a cast member but fired him before the season began over racist remarks.
