"Star Trek" alum Walter Koenig has died at 90 years old.

The actor, known for playing Russian navigator Pavel Chekov on the original sci-fi series, died from old age Sunday, Oct. 25, surrounded by his daughter and niece at his home in Los Angeles, his representative confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY on Oct. 26.

"Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world," rep Zachary McGinnis shared in the statement, praising the actor for inspiring "audiences with his optimism, humor, and adventurous spirit."

In 1967, Koenig joined the original "Star Trek" as Chekov, appearing in 36 of the 50 episodes until its conclusion in 1969. He reprised the role for decades to come, including in all seven original movies and other various offshoots.

"Walter's legacy extends far beyond the screen," McGinnis continued. "Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what 'Star Trek' meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it."

The statement highlighted Koenig's "distinguished career," during which he demonstrated "versatility as an actor and his genuine love for his craft" in projects beyond "Star Trek." Earlier this year, he won the platinum award for best actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards for his most recent role the short film "Mr. Fleischmann."

Koenig was born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1936, and was raised primarily in New York City. He began his acting career in high school and landed his first onscreen gigs in the 1960s, with small parts on shows like "Day in Court," "General Hospital" and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour."

Among his many other credits are "Columbo," "Futurama" and "Babylon 5," which also featured his "Star Trek" costar and wife Judy Levitt. The pair were married for 57 years until her death in December 2022. Koenig is also predeceased by their son Andrew, who died by suicide in 2010 at the age of 41.

In addition to acting, Koenig directed several theater productions, taught acting classes and was a published author.

The statement concluded: "On behalf of all of us, we extend our deepest condolences to Walter's family, friends, colleagues, and the millions of fans whose lives he touched over the decades. Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before. Rest in peace."

George Takei remembers Walter Koenig as 'a loyal friend'

Koenig's "Star Trek" co-star George Takei paid tribute to his longtime friend in an Oct. 26 Instagram post, reflecting on their nearly six decades of friendship.

"My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today," Takei wrote alongside a photo of the two actors. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades."

Takei also recalled Koenig serving as the best man at his 2008 wedding to Brad Altman and their shared Sept. 14 milestone, which marked Koenig's 90th birthday and the couple's 18th wedding anniversary.

"Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend," Takei continued. "To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."
