Jason Dohring left acting to focus on farming, a passion he discovered during the COVID-19 pandemic

He now runs his third farm, aiming to grow food for thousands and promote healthier eating

During an appearance on the Don’t Do Nothing podcast, he fondly reflects on Veronica Mars, praising its cast, including Kristen Bell and guest stars like Paris Hilton

Jason Dohring has stepped back from Hollywood in recent years to pursue a passion that helps keep him and his family healthy.

During the Wednesday, Aug. 26 episode of the Don’t Do Nothing podcast, the father of four, who played Logan Echolls opposite Kristen Bell on the teen drama Veronica Mars, shared what made him choose a simpler lifestyle in Florida.

“About, like, three-and-a-half, four years ago, I guess COVID area, I sorta got into gardening, and I was like, ‘Dude, this is so cool,’ ” Dohring, 44, said. “I didn’t even notice COVID for months ‘cause I was in my backyard and just gardening and stuff like that.”

Dohring admitted the newfound pastime wasn’t “a huge thing,” until three years later, when he found himself on his third farm “making great food for people.”

“I really realized that people are getting sick from the food that they’re eating,” the actor said, adding that farmers can even change the flavor of certain crops.

For Dohring, learning and creating in a different area in his life was enough to lead him to step back from acting.

“I told my agents, ‘I’m just gonna go farm for a minute,’ and they said, ‘Well, we’re still gonna send you stuff,’ and I said, ‘Okay, fine,’ ” he said on Don’t Do Nothing, adding that he would “probably jump back into [acting] at some point.”

Dohring also opened up about what it was like filming the fan-favorite drama series.

“I did a show called Veronica Mars back in the day, and I was very proud of that one, and I think it was cool ‘cause we had a cast and we all came out of high school, and everybody in the cast was incredible,” he said.

He added that the casting directors picked a special group of people who have gone on to do great things.

“You’ll see people come through that show that have won Oscars now, and like, wow, I mean, legit people, Jessica Chastain, Armie Hammer,” he said. “Good people. Kristen Bell, and just awesome people.”

Dohring, who reprised his role as Logan in the 2014 Veronica Mars film, went on to mention past series guests like Amanda Seyfried and Paris Hilton, the latter of whom “played my girlfriend for an episode or two in her heyday.”

Looking back on the opportunity as “unbelievable,” he praised Hilton, 45, as “very, very smart.”

In 2019, Dohring spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about Hilton, looking back on times during filming when the two “would go out to these restaurants.” He remembered the socialite, who was “one of the most famous people in the world,” as someone with a great sense of humor who was also “very intelligent.”

As for Dohring’s future, he recently did a short film, but wants to “grow food for 5,000 people,” and ultimately “help people, in whatever way, whether it’s farming, gardening, education, art — I just love it.”

Dohring was last seen on television on SEAL Team Six in 2021. Outside of Veronica Mars, he also starred in episodes of iZombie, Bluff City Law and All Rise.
