Coco Gauff’s mother Candi has delivered an emphatic reaction to her daughter’s stunning pirate-inspired look for this year’s Halloween. Gauff, currently on a break from competitive tennis action, shared the look via her social media and at the time of writing, the relevant post has drawn countless reactions similar to Candi’s.

On Saturday, October 31, the former World No. 2 and two-time Grand Slam singles champion took to her Instagram and shared a carousel post featuring six pictures of her pirate-inspired look, which consisted of a blend of traditional swashbuckler details with a modern streetwear silhouette. The 22-year-old American WTA icon, who is widely regarded for her exemplary athleticism and on-court fighting spirit, playfully captioned the post:

“Coming to an ocean near you đŸŽâ€â˜ ïžđŸ—Ąïžâ€

Not long after Gauff shared the post, her mother Candi, a former track and field athlete and gymnast at Florida State University, entered the comments and wrote:

“This one is fire. You get it from your momma.”

Candi happens to be one of Gauff’s greatest pillars of support, frequently attending her daughter’s matches at women’s tennis’ biggest tournaments and cheering on the current World No. 5.

Coco Gauff expected to return to competitive tennis action at the year-end WTA Finals

In mid-October, Gauff secured her qualification for the singles field at this year’s WTA Finals, which will be held in Indian Wells. The 22-year-old is a former champion at the prestigious year-end tournament, having conquered the event’s 2024 edition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This year, she is slated to be joined at the year-end championships by rivals Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova.

Gauff’s most recent on-court outing was her shocking fourth-round defeat at the hands of Belgian star Elise Mertens at the China Open in Beijing. At the time, the young American was embroiled in a controversy that saw her having to deal with vile racist abuse from fans online after she stopped a point in her third-round match against Sun Xinran. Much of the abuse accused Gauff of cheating, and the American vehemently denied the accusations.

The development sparked condemnation of the abusive messages she received, with numerous high-profile figures from the world of tennis coming out in the American’s support. The controversy became so big that even the UN Human Rights Office released a statement.
