‘The NY Yankees Need an A******’: MLB Insider Urges Replacing Top Coach With Specific Team Legend

A notable New York Yankees insider believes the team badly needs a tough-guy leader in their locker room and that they can get that by replacing bench coach Brad Ausmus with a specific franchise legend.

Much to the chagrin of Yankees fans, despite a 93-win season, the club was sent home early again after a decisive drubbing in the American League Division Series. In 2025, they were sent packing in four games by division rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays. This year, they were swept by another AL East foe, the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the days since, there has been a lot of discourse on why the Yankees’ title drought was extended to 17 seasons this month. Some have blamed being without reigning MVP Aaron Judge during the playoffs. Others have complained about the lack of players who can get on base and drive in runs in the postseason. However, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman has gone in a different direction recently.

Last week, the veteran MLB insider claimed, “The Yankees now exist in a world that I would describe as unreality. They have created an incubator of trying to keep negative news out that has fostered a fake positivity and a cliché-ridden level of nonsense.”

The overall idea is that the New York clubhouse lacks a classic leader who can put an arm on a shoulder to pick a player up. But also kick them in the butt and hold them accountable when they are costing them games. Well, this week, Sherman offered up an interesting idea to bring that into the Yankees locker room next season, and it would require firing bench coach Brad Ausmus.

Should the New York Yankees bring in Jorge Posada as their new bench coach?

“The Yankees kind of need a bit of an a******,” Sherman said on a new edition of The Show podcast. “I think that they’ve never fully replaced Brett Gardner and CC Sabathia in their clubhouse. I think there was a little fear factor that those two guys offered. I know Gardner kind of went after guys. And I just think CC’s physical reality and how team-oriented he was scared guys.”

While Gardner and Sabathia both had different careers, they are both beloved former Yankees because of the passion they brought on and off the field. So does that mean Sherman would like to see either added to the current Yankees coaching staff? No. He actually had a different team great in mind.

“How about making Jorge Posada the bench coach?” Sherman asked. “Here’s why. He harkens to a time when the standard was higher. Obviously, it was very little with Team Italy [in the World Baseball Classic], but he’s been in a dugout recently… I think they need somebody to hold them to a higher standard and say, ‘What are we doing here?”

Brad Ausmus is currently the team’s bench coach, so hiring Posada for the role would mean firing the former Houston Astros star. And Sherman admits he isn’t confident Posada would even take the job. But the idea is sound.

The man who played all 17 of his big league seasons in New York was a six-time All-Star, won four World Series, and was a key leader on many very good Yankees teams. The long-time catcher also served as a hitting coach on the Italian team that impressed many during this year’s WBC.
