‘The baddest’: Lil Nas X announces death of his mother with a touching tribute

In a single photo, the Grammy Award winner acknowledged the “hurt” of losing his mother.

Lil Nas X is mourning.

On Saturday, the Grammy Award winner for “Old Town Road” took to social media and revealed that his mother, Tameka Hill, had passed away.

In a series of photos, the country rapper born Montero Hill paid tribute to his mother, including a photo from when he was a child and another of them together, taken shortly after he became a global star with his debut single.

“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt,” he wrote.

No cause of death was revealed in Hill’s death.

In a 2020 profile for Variety, Nas explained that his mother was an addict and that he was doing his best to get her into rehab.

“I never really talk about my mom,” he said at the time. “She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”

The revelation about Hill’s death comes after Nas himself reached a personal milestone. Last year, the “Industry Baby” rapper was arrested for hitting a police officer during a manic episode. He entered a mental health diversion program in April, and on his return to social media in June, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was thankful he was getting help.

“I’ve been in rehab for a few months and since then, I’ve been back at home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends and whatnot, and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,” he told fans in the video shared on June 17. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful when I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis.

“I feel like I had known for like the past few years but I didn’t want to admit to it because I didn’t want to have to take medication and have people think different of me… Black, gay, bipolar. I’m living life on like extreme hard mode,” he added. “But on a serious note, I’m doing much better. I’m doing better, I’m feeling better.”
