Sam Neill is being remembered by celebrities and costars following his “sudden and expected” death at 78.

The actor, best known for his role as Alan Grant in *Jurassic Park*, died on Monday “surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” his family shared in a statement.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” the statement continued. “They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

Neill’s colleagues mourned his death, including his *Jurassic Park* director Steven Spielberg.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in *Jurassic Park*,” Spielberg said in a statement posted to Amblin Entertainment’s Instagram account. “Sam was exceptionally collaborative. It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children. I adored making all the *Jurassic* movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our *Jurassic* family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.”

Dern, who played Neill’s love interest in the films, called the actor her “beloved lifetime friend” in a statement to **. “He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit,” Dern said. “He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”

Nicole Kidman, who starred with Neill in *Dead Calm* in 1989, said she was “immensely saddened” by the news.

“Sam was one of the greats, a joy to be around,” Kidman said in a statement to *The Sydney Morning Herald*. “We met when I was just 18 and he took me under his wing and we stayed friends for life. He was charming, kind, funny and intelligent. He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family.”

Neill’s *A Long Way Down *and* Dirty Deeds *costar Toni Collette shared a thoughtful post on her Instagram Stories.

“My friend Sam left us this morning. Yes, he was an incredible actor. But he was also the most beautiful, decent gentleman. A big hearted king with a dry, hilarious wit. I feel so lucky to have known him,” she wrote. “When I think of Sam I always see him giggling. It is a terribly sad day. Rest in peace, dear Sam.”

She also shared a throwback group photo featuring herself and Neill on Instagram, writing, “I love you, dear Sam. You hero. You legend. You sweetheart. Our great friend. You are already missed so very much. Continue in peace wherever you are.”

Jeff Goldblum, who starred in *Jurassic Park *with Neill as Ian Malcolm, shared pictures of them and Dern from the 1993 movie. “The next great adventure begins. Love, always and forever. 🦕💕,” Goldblum captioned the Instagram post. The trio reunited months before for a dinosaur-themed Super Bowl Xfinity ad.

*Peaky Blinders* star Annabelle Wallis shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Neill and Murphy on set on Instagram. “Thank you, Sam, for the memories. I will never forget your kindness and loving heart,” she wrote. “My heart goes out to your family and all those who love you. 💔 You will be missed.”
