On the July 6 episode of The McBee Dynasty, Cole McBee proposed to longtime girlfriend Kacie Adkison in an emotional family moment filmed with Steve McBee Sr. present

The scene happened before Steve Sr. began serving time in prison for crop insurance fraud

Despite hardships, the family says Steve Sr.’s absence has brought them closer together as they focus on moving forward

Steve McBee Sr. made a rare appearance during the July 6 episode The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys.

In the episode, the McBee family comes together as son Cole McBee pops the question to longtime girlfriend Kacie Adkison in front of their loved ones, including Steve Sr., who hasn’t appeared thus far this season.

“Having all our family and friends here, especially my dad, is the best thing ever,” Cole, 26, says. “Life will really be changing a lot when my dad goes away. I just wanted to propose while he’s still here and enjoy this with everybody.”

During the heartfelt moment, Steve Sr., 54, (who did appear on the last two seasons) can be seen smiling while Cole and Kacie enter holding their daughter, Blair, after the proposal. Cole’s mother Kristi McBee, his brothers Steven McBee Jr., Jesse McBee, Brayden McBee, sister-in-law Alli McBee, Kacie’s mother and Jimmy McBee are also in attendance.

Ahead of the proposal, Cole visits a jeweler to purchase Kacie’s engagement ring, and explains that finances have been strained by the family’s farming debt and Steve Sr.‘s sentencing in crop insurance fraud case. Still, he says Kacie, 28, deserves the ring she’s always wanted.

Cole reveals that Kacie had previously told him she wasn’t ready to get engaged and wanted to see him make changes before taking the next step. Since then, he says he’s matured, has been drinking less and finally feels like they’re in a stable place after building their home and welcoming daughter Blair.

“Kacie and Blair are my motivation through everything,” he says.

Cole ultimately chooses a large radiant-cut diamond after saving for a long time, joking that Kacie had made one request: she wanted something “big.”

The proposal takes place beneath a gazebo at a hotel, where family members help decorate the space and keep Kacie distracted by making her think she’s headed to dinner after a spa day.

As he waits for her arrival, Cole admits he’s nervous, remembering her previous hesitation about getting engaged. Once she arrives, he calls Kacie his best friend, his hunting partner and praises her as an incredible mother to Blair before getting down on one knee.

Kacie says yes, later calling the proposal everything she had dreamed of. She says there was never any doubt once she realized she loved Cole, while Cole jokes that he’s officially off the market.

While the proposal was filmed before Steve Sr. reported to prison, it airs months after he began serving his sentence at a federal prison camp in Yankton, S.D. In 2024, he pleaded guilty in a multi-million-dollar crop insurance fraud case. On Oct. 16, 2025, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay $4,022,124 in restitution.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE in June, Steven Jr. said the family has shifted its focus away from hoping for a presidential pardon and instead they’re concentrating on moving forward.

“We’re just putting our heads down, grinding and working through things as if nothing is going to happen,” Steven said. “I think that’s the best way to work through this. If that happened, then great. But we don’t expect it, and we’re working through it either way.”

Cole said his father has remained optimistic while serving his sentence.

“He’s doing as good as he can be for the circumstances,” Cole told PEOPLE. “He’s a very optimistic person, so he’s staying positive. He’s trying to take this situation — we all are — and we’re learning from it as much as we can. We’re trying to grow from it and try and do better from everything here forward.”

Despite the difficult chapter, both brothers said their father’s absence has ultimately brought the family closer together.

“There were some very, very rough days for our family,” Cole said. “But it definitely brought us all closer together and really made us stick together as a family more than ever.”

McBee Sr. surrendered to federal prison on Dec. 1, 2025, to begin serving a 24-month sentence
