Pat McAfee’s move into music has created a new source of debate around one of sports media’s biggest personalities.

His debut country-hip-hop album has faced plenty of jokes since its release, but one conversation in particular has intensified after NFL analyst Lindsey got blocked for mocking the project.

This decision pulled fans into a discussion about McAfee’s relationship with criticism.

McAfee released The Diary of a Polarizing Figure earlier this month, giving listeners a 14-track project built from songs he says he had been writing for 20 years. Country star Jelly Roll encouraged McAfee to turn those ideas into an album, which eventually became a deeply personal project for the former NFL punter.

The music has not escaped criticism. Fans and media figures have questioned the lyrics, McAfee’s country-style delivery, and the early AI-generated concepts associated with the project.

Lindsey had already joined the online jokes before the blocking incident. On Aug. 16, she shared a post on X claiming she had listened to one song from McAfee’s album and “just stole a catalytic converter.” She later clarified that she had not actually listened to the song, writing, “I didn’t actually listen to it lol. I’m not crazy.”

Nearly two weeks later, Lindsey shared a screenshot showing that The Pat McAfee Show account had blocked her. She posted the image with a simple caption: “Was it something I said?”

The post drew reactions from NFL fans on X, many of whom focused less on the album itself and more on McAfee’s decision to block a critic. One fan wrote, “Thin-skinned punter,” using McAfee’s former position as the basis for the jab. Another followed with, “He is a punter lol soft.”

The reaction also brought up McAfee’s previous encounters with online criticism. NFL writer Zach Jacobson shared his own experience from the 2023 Aaron Rodgers saga, writing, “I tweeted the words ‘Pat McAfee’s schtick is getting old,’ and he name-searched himself and blocked me during the whole Aaron Rodgers saga in 2023.”

Some fans treated the block as something critics could proudly display. One wrote, “That’s a badge of honor!” Another took aim at what it saw as a contradiction in McAfee’s public persona, saying, “Pat McAfee clearly not doing anything to shake the ‘punters are soft’ label, but I don’t think he’d lean into it so hard. What a loser.”

Another user wrote, “They are all snowflakes,” while a separate fan shared a GIF calling McAfee a loser and added, “He can lash out, but can’t take it.”

McAfee has acknowledged that the album has received harsh treatment online. During an Aug. 20 Instagram Q&A, he admitted, “It [explicit],” while discussing the reaction to his music and the difficulties of being a polarizing public figure.

Still, McAfee made clear that the project matters to him. “I like the songs a lot. I’m very proud of them,” he wrote, adding that he wrote and sang every word on the 14-song album. He also said he hopes his children will listen to the songs years from now and better understand their father.
