Warner Bros. unveiled the first trailer for Tom Cruise’s new movie *Digger*.

The footage shows the first clear glimpse of the *Jerry Maguire* actor’s wild physical transformation in the film.

*Digger* will debut in theaters on Oct. 2.

Tom Cruise looks ridiculously different in the latest footage from his new movie.

Warner Bros. released the first trailer for *Digger*, the upcoming comedy film from Alejandro González Iñárritu. The new footage reveals the first proper look at Cruise’s bizarre character Digger Rockwell.

Cruise is wearing a whole lot of prosthetics to make him look far older and heavier than his usual appearance.

The film follows the cantankerous Digger Rockwell as he mitigates the fallout from a drilling project that goes horribly wrong.

Since his only projects in the past decade have been *Mission: Impossible* and *Top Gun* sequels, *Digger* marks Cruise’s first non-franchise film since 2017’s *American Made*.

“This kind of movie is why I wanted to make movies…I have to say, it took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell,” Cruise said in April at CinemaCon, where he appeared alongside Iñárritu to hype up the film and also praised the *Birdman* filmmaker’s talents. “His voice in cinema is extraordinary, and I’m so honored to work with you and inspired by what you create, my friend.”

In his own remarks, Iñárritu compared *Digger* to Cruise’s previous work. “We know that he is fearless, the stunts, the planes, the jumps, but I have to say, embodying this character, I think this is another kind of fearless,” the director said.

Jesse Plemons, who previously worked with Cruise on *American Made* and costars in *Digger*, briefly teased the project in an interview with *Variety*. “It’s one of the strangest, funniest, most tragic scripts I’ve read,” the *Bugonia* star said. “There’s a kind of modern-day *Dr. Strangelove* thing, and then it becomes something else entirely.”

He continued, “Getting to see Tom just go for it — not in a death-defying action way but fully showing what an incredible actor he is — that was thrilling.”

Riz Ahmed, who also plays a supporting role in the film, shared a story about Cruise’s positive attitude on set in March. “He doesn’t have an off-switch. I remember once, we were in the middle of a rehearsal, and I tried out an idea, and the idea sucked,” Ahmed recalled on *The Tonight Show*. “[Cruise] goes, ‘When you try things like that, and you’re creating, you’re taking swings — I love it! Round of applause for Riz!’”

*Digger* will hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2026. Watch the trailer above.
