Sara Bareilles' song "Home" was inspired by Anderson Cooper's emotional interview with Stephen Colbert about grief and loss

Bareilles joked she wouldn't give Cooper writing credits because he has "enough money"

Sara Bareilles isn't giving Anderson Cooper a cut after she wrote a song inspired by his conversation with Stephen Colbert.

In an interview published in Rolling Stone on Tuesday, June 30, Bareilles was asked about her newest single "Home," which she insists was "100 percent" plagiarized.

"I'm like, 'I'm not giving you writing credits.' You have enough money, Anderson Cooper," the "Love Song" singer, 46, quipped.

In March, Bareilles played "Home" for the first time during an appearance on All There Is with Anderson Cooper, and she told the host, 59, that his interview with Colbert, 62, was a source of inspiration.

"He had this incredible conversation with Stephen Colbert. It's these two men that I really love, and their tenderness with each other and about their loss was so moving to me," she told Rolling Stone.

She continued, "Stephen lost his father and two brothers in a plane crash when he was 10 years old. And he talks about his father being 53, and how profound the day was for him the day he turned a day older than his father ever got to be."

Reflecting on his story, Bareilles said that the theme of the song felt like the "centerpiece of the record."

"We get to, and we must, go everywhere within ourselves and share it with each other in order to come back home. Home is about connection, it's about recognition, it's about catharsis. We just have to be brave enough to go into the dark corners to find the light," she said.

While Bareilles played it for Cooper on the podcast — and the moment drove him to tears — she said she sent it to Colbert separately and he was surprised.

"They were like, 'I can't believe you wrote a song about that. You made a song.' It's the way I felt when I saw Mia Michaels choreograph this dance to 'Gravity' on So You Think You Can Dance," she said.

Cooper and Colbert's podcast episode aired in 2022, and they shared their experiences about grief and loss. At the time, Bareilles was navigating deaths in her life and she wrote "Home" to process those feelings.

"Home" will be featured on her upcoming album Good Grief, which is set for release on Aug. 28.
