Ranchers’ beef: Bring back strict US labeling, they say

(NewsNation) — Advocates for U.S. cattle farmers say President Trump’s attempts to lower beef prices won’t solve the longstanding inequities that American farmers and ranchers face.

Trump has announced plans to lower tariffs on foreign beef in hopes that more product in the U.S. marketplace will lower prices. In response to complaints by U.S. farmers, the president promised to take steps that would allow producers to bypass the meatpacking industry and process their own meat.

Clare Dunn, a country recording artist who comes from a ranching background in Colorado, tells NewsNation that farmers continue to be at a disadvantage in dealing with the so-called “big four” meatpackers.

Fact check: Is imported Argentine beef unsafe or secretly horse meat?

If policymakers really wanted to help ranchers, she said, they would revive stringent labeling standards so that American consumers could see where their meat is coming from.

“When we still had ‘country of origin’ labeling, we saw that American people want American-grown beef. The American people want to support our product,” Dunn said.

John Boyd Jr., founder of the National Black Farmers Association, also supports the idea of beefing up labeling requirements.

“Americans want to know exactly what they’re buying,” he said.

Labeling a meat source’s country of origin is voluntary, but companies must meet certain standards if they choose to put a “Made in the USA” or “Product of USA” label on their meat, poultry and eggs.

Under a recent federal rule, these USA-branded products must be born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the U.S.
