Prince William’s absence from the FIFA World Cup is reportedly due to Donald Trump. The event is a unifying spectacle, and royal presence at past tournaments has represented national support. The royal heir often attends football matches and presents trophies at major finals, hence his no-show this year stood out to fans and commentators.

Report suggests Donald Trump is the reason Prince William has not attended any World Cup game

Donald Trump’s attendance is reportedly the reason Prince William has stayed away from any World Cup matches this year.

The standout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been the royals. Among the attendees were King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein, Princess Rajwa and their daughter Princess Iman. Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon made his tournament debut beside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, along with his children Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.

But one notable absence was the president of England’s Football Association, Prince William. According to a new report, he was 6,000km away attending an event with The Winkle Club in Hastings, Sussex, where he met local fishermen and played a round of mini golf, per News.com.au.

As reported by Dan Wakeford, former People editor and author of the Celebrity Intelligence newsletter, the Prince has skipped every World Cup match to “avoid any chance” of encountering Donald Trump.

“Trump loves the royals, and William and Kate especially, so there are concerns within royal circles that if William turns up in America right now, Trump makes a beeline for him. William’s done more than enough Trump-time over the past year,” a palace insider told the newsletter.

Additionally, Prince William had earlier indicated that he wasn’t planning to attend. On July 3, he appeared on Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast and was asked directly what a successful World Cup would look like for England. “I think winning it,” he replied, without hesitation. When the older Kelce brother asked if that meant he’d fly across the Atlantic, the 44-year-old concurred, said “Definitely, if we’re in the finals.
