As per Rob Shuter’s Substack, King Charles issued the message. However, sources claimed Prince William was “the force behind it.” The report said there had been “days of confusion” around Harry and Meghan’s return. It claimed Charles formally confirmed, “nothing has changed.”

The Sussexes were described as “not working royals,” unable to use HRH, and still “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” Sources also said the Sussexes had hoped the move could slowly thaw relations and create an informal family role.

Meanwhile, Shuter reported that William wanted “zero ambiguity” around their royal status. A royal source claimed, “William had had enough of the confusion.” The insider said, “Lord Lieutenancies were asking ‘how the couple should be treated.'” According to the source, William’s answer was “brutally simple.” That answer was, “nothing has changed. They are out.”

The clarification reportedly came through the Lord Chamberlain at the King’s direction. Another insider claimed the couple began questioning whether the return could work after realizing William could close doors quickly.

Still, the report said the clarification shut down talk of an informal royal lane. It claimed the note “effectively kills” any suggestion that returning to Britain changed official life. However, an insider said Harry and Meghan were informed before public release.

“There was no negotiation. They were informed,” the source said. The insider claimed they “underestimated William’s power.” Another source added, “William has won, for now.” For Prince William, King Charles, Harry, and Meghan, the verdict kept official status outside the comeback story.
