Prince Harry’s U.K. Return Has “Changed the Narrative” and Put Prince William in “Quite an Unenviable Position”

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet arrived back in the U.K. on August 26, one week after news broke that the family of four intended to move back to Britain imminently.

The return of the family has “changed the narrative,” Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton told Vanity Fair.

Prince William in particular has been put “in quite an unenviable position, and his hand is really being forced on this,” royal biographer Katie Nicholl told Hello!.

In families, as we all know, nothing happens in a vacuum. The actions of one family member affects all of the others—and the same is true even if you’re royalty.

Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, arrived in the U.K. on August 26, moving back to Harry’s home country for an extended period of time. The move came one week after news broke  of the Sussex family’s impending return on August 19; Archie and Lilibet are due to begin school in the U.K. this week. This move has “changed the narrative,” Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton told Vanity Fair in a new report—particularly for Harry’s brother Prince William.

The Sussexes are living in a private, non-royal residence outside of London, and neither Harry nor Meghan is expected to return to the working royal roles they left in 2020, when they moved to the United States—Montecito, California, specifically. Instead, Harry will remain busy with his Invictus Games and other patronages, while Meghan will continue to run her As Ever lifestyle brand from the U.K., and is reportedly eyeing a return to acting after nearly a decade away.

Harry’s surprise return to Britain has especially affected his older brother William, according to royal biographer Katie Nicholl. William and Harry are not thought to have spoken in nearly four years, since the September 2022 funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. The two were last in the same room together at the 2024 funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, but they reportedly didn’t speak to one another. The Duke of Sussex’s return will leave the Prince of Wales feeling “pressured,” Nicholl told Hello!, noting that the situation is likely to become “very difficult” as the two are now in such close proximity to one another.

“In many ways, Harry’s really got William over a barrel, because it will be very difficult with them being geographically so much closer and Harry being welcomed back into the royal fold by his father [King Charles], at least, for William to be adamant that there will be no reconciliation,” she continued.

Nicholl said that William and his wife Kate Middleton likely felt “blindsided” by Harry and Meghan’s unexpected decision to return to the U.K. after six years away. “I think this move to Britain will accelerate that inevitable reconciliation which will have to come at some point,” Nicholl said of the brothers. She noted that the rift stems from “a massive breakdown in trust” between the two couples.

“The one thing we know about William is he is absolutely committed to the future of the monarchy, and therefore he is in quite an unenviable position, and his hand is really being forced on this,” Nicholl added.

Reporting for Vanity Fair, the longtime royal reporter said that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been “derailed” by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s sudden arrival, “which has sent shockwaves through the royal family,” Nicholl wrote.

“There’s a sense that William is going to have to be watching over his shoulder the whole time,” a source told the outlet. “He doesn’t know what his brother is going to spring on them all next.”

“This was meant to be a happy time for him,” the insider added of the future king. After her cancer diagnosis in 2024, “Catherine is doing well,” the source added (she announced in 2025 that she is in remission), and Prince George, 13, “is just about to start Eton,” referring to Eton College, the prestigious all-boys’ school that is both William and Harry’s alma mater. “This has just derailed them.”

Charles and William have spoken “one-on-one” about Harry and Meghan’s return to the U.K. and are “on the same page” and “completely aligned” about the Sussexes, Nicholl reported. Charles, along with Queen Camilla, met with the Sussex family of four in July at the king’s country home, Highgrove, and “Charles is genuinely happy that Harry is back, because it means they will see more of him and the children,” the source said. “But I do know that he is dreading the prospect of Harry resurrecting his battle with the Home Office over security and the sense that the Harry-and-Meghan soap opera is about to start all over again.”

William, for his part, “is very concerned about the Sussexes coming back and why they have made the decision so quickly,” the insider shared. “He is adamant the situation must remain as it is and that Harry and Meghan will not carry out royal engagements. He has sought his father’s assurance there will be no changes to the present situation.”

Morton said that “There have always been tensions between William and Harry, even before Meghan came on the scene, from who would get the biggest room at Balmoral to their charities. But those tensions are greater now than they have ever been.”

“The brothers are at opposite ends of the spectrum,” he added. “By coming back home, Harry has changed the narrative, and William is fuming.”

Morton predicted that “there will be pressure on William to be the bigger person and forgive his brother,” but the royal biographer added that it likely won’t happen anytime soon. “I think that is still some way off,” he said.
