After wrapping her world tour and a packed festival run this past summer, Olivia Rodrigo has made it clear: The GUTS chapter is officially closed, and a new era is on the horizon. After subtle onstage Easter eggs and direct messages to her fans, Rodrigo finally revealed that her third studio album—originally nicknamed ā€œOR3ā€ by her fans—is titled you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

Here’s what we know so far about the pop star’s next project.

When will Olivia Rodrigo’s third album be released?

Rodrigo’s third album will be released on June 12.

On April 2, she unveiled the album cover art, release date, and title: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

ā€œI am so proud of this album and I can’t wait for you to hear it!ā€ she wrote on Instagram.

Rodrigo teased a 2026 release in an October 2025 interview with Nylon, telling the outlet, ā€œI won’t say too much, but I think 2026 is going to be a busy year for me. I’ve been having a lot of fun dreaming things up.ā€

Weeks before revealing the album cover and release date, Rodrigo her phone hotline with a new message that said her fans’ patience would be ā€œrewarded soon.ā€

The full message read, ā€œIf you are hearing this on the last day of pisces season, March 20th, this message was meant for you. Take what resonates and leave what does not. Waiting for your destiny may feel like watching paint dry, but your patience will be rewarded soon. You may think you have all the answers, but the universe has more to share. The writing is on the wall, but the first message may not paint the full picture.ā€

It continued, ā€œTrust your intuition. Expect true clarity and renewal just after the pink moon. Until then, follow the stars, your guides, and your heart, knowing that the best is yet to come.ā€

When is the first single dropping?

Soon. The pop star left four heart-shaped locks around Los Angeles, Paris, London, and Hoboken, N.J. that revealed her first single from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is titled ā€œDrop Dead.ā€ The release date, April 17, also appeared on one of the locks.

Rodrigo later shared the official art for ā€œDrop Deadā€ā€”an image of her blowing a bubble with chewing gum—on April 7. ā€œā€˜Drop dead,’ the first single from my new album, is out april 17!!! 🩷,ā€ she captioned the post, confirming the single’s release date.

One week ahead of the single’s release, Rodrigo shared a snippet of the song without vocals. In the video, Rodrigo sits at in what appears to be a pub and drinks a glass of beer while wearing a pink outfit with a white ruffled collar underneath a jacket decorated with a ā€œsuper sweetā€ button.

ā€œI hope you never finish that beer,ā€ she wrote over the video.

What other hints did Rodrigo drop about the album?

In a promo video for American Express posted in October 2025, the pop star confirmed, ā€œNow I’m home, and I’m working on my new album.ā€

Prior to, Rodrigo seemed to hint that OR3 was underway. At her final festival performance for the GUTS tour at Osheaga in Montreal, she walked onstage wearing a red T-shirt with a glittered number three on the front. After the show, she handed out her signature GUTS rings to fans as a symbolic farewell to her second album cycle. The moment was widely interpreted as her transition into a new creative era, with Capital Official commenting, ā€œred looks good on you šŸ‘€.ā€

She wore red frequently during that time, including during her July 2025 appearance at Wimbledon and in some of her other performances. The color change led fans to speculate that red may be the visual anchor for the third album.

Changes to her official website further fueled speculation. Fans noticed the site’s color palette shifted from purple, long associated with both SOUR and GUTS, to red.

Even her butterfly logo, previously purple, appeared in red. The shift, though subtle, suggests an intentional rebranding ahead of a new release.

In March 2026, a new logo appeared around Los Angeles, which led to even more theories. Shared by Olivia Rodrigo fan account @livieshq on Instagram, the logo was painted across several walls and included the star’s initials.

Days after the logo change, Rodrigo’s website was to a brand new color—a soft pink.

The singer hinted at the color change with her attendance at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscars Party on March 15. She wore a blush pink, cocktail-length Saint Laurent dress by Anthony Vaccarello. The strapless dress featured a tied bow at the waist and a feathered skirt.

Rodrigo hasn’t shared the meaning behind the album cover yet, but eagle-eyed fans noticed that her boyfriend, Louis Partridge, shared a picture of Jean-HonorĆ© Fragonard’s 18th century painting, ā€œThe Swing,ā€ on display at a museum, in a March 4 carousel roundup and noted that it looked similar to the album cover.

Much like Rodrigo’s album cover, the Rococo era painting features a woman in a pink dress, enjoying her time on a swing. Fans noted that it might have been Patridge hinting at his pop star girlfriend’s upcoming album.

The dress Rodrigo wears on the cover of the album also looks similar to the one she wore while performing ā€œall-american bitchā€ on Saturday Night Live in December 2023.

What has Olivia Rodrigo said about the album’s sound or themes?

While Rodrigo has remained relatively tight-lipped about the album itself, she’s offered glimpses into how her songwriting has evolved. In an interview with Open House Party in July 2023, she said she was already brainstorming concepts for her third album, even before GUTS was officially out. ā€œI’ve actually been thinking about it a lot,ā€ she said at the time. ā€œI just barely finished GUTS, so I can’t get too ahead of myself, but, yeah, I definitely am ideating. The wheels are spinning.ā€

She spoke with Daily Star U.K. in June 2025 about how her personal growth impacts her creative output. ā€œAs I just grow as a person, and I learn more about music, and I have different perspectives, it’s impossible for that not to be reflected in your songwriting,ā€ she said. ā€œHopefully by the time I put out my next album, it’ll feel more mature and like a different take on things.ā€

She also told ELLE that she’s experimenting with ā€œnew sounds.ā€ She said in October 2025, ā€œI’m working on new music and I’m having a lot of fun. It’s nice to be home from touring, to really get to sink my teeth into new songs and new sounds and new stories. I’m having a really good time.ā€

As for how the new material differs from GUTS and SOUR, Rodrigo explained, ā€œIt feels so different. Just by virtue of, I guess I’m a little older now and I feel like I have more experience. I think the tour and all the festivals were really educational for me and taught me a lot about who I am and what kind of music I want to make and what music I want to play for people. I’m taking all those lessons into the studio with me.ā€

In a March 2026 interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo confirmed that the tracks on her upcoming album are ā€œsad love songs.ā€ She added, ā€œI realized all my favourite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them.ā€ The author of the feature described the tracks as ā€œlove songs, but specifically about the obsession and anxiety of it—or the depression when your lover is gone.ā€

The feature additionally revealed that Rodrigo has been channeling dance and orchestral sounds, particularly on the last track of the album. The pop star described the song as her representation of ā€œwhat being in love feels like.ā€

ā€œYou’re getting to the core of all of your issues: how you feel about yourself, your insecurities, what makes you joyful,ā€ she explained. ā€œIt feels like the most raw form of you, which is so scary and terrifying and uncomfortable, sometimes, but beautiful at times.ā€

In an April interview with Zane Lowe at Apple Music, Rodrigo shared a bit about her anxiety as the album makes its roll-out.

ā€œIt’s scary,ā€ she admitted. ā€œI haven’t put out music in a long time and it’s a really vulnerable thing to be like this is what I’ve been going through, this is what I’ve been thinking about. It’s a very unique experience to like be so personal on such a large scale.ā€

She continued, ā€œBut I love it, I think it’s the reason why I love writing songs so much is because I get to process that for myself and then therefore maybe help other people kind of process it and feel it. But it is it’s nerve-wracking, I’d be lying if I if I said it was like, ā€˜Wow this feels totally normal and like intuitive.ā€™ā€

She also talked a bit about leaving behind her younger, teen persona.

ā€œI think I kind of knew really early on that I sort of wanted to break that mold a little bit,ā€ Rodrigo shared. ā€œI mean, I’m older now. This is like an album that I made when I was 22. The other albums I made when I was a teenager and it just sort of felt like a natural progression to just sort of switch things up and just artistically wanted to just do something different.ā€
