Noah Wyle is recalling the last time he and George Clooney had a chance to meet up and hang out together.

The two actors have been friends for decades, ever since costarring in the medical drama ER, which aired from 1994 to 2009. While chatting exclusively with PEOPLE at the 2026 AARP Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles on Jan 10, Wyle, 54, shared that he and Clooney, 64, get together whenever their busy schedules align.

Remembering their most recent meetup for dinner, the Pitt star said, “It was either here in L.A. at the Chateau Marmont one night when he was in between jobs, or it was in Vancouver when I was working on something and he was in New Vancouver."

“It's one of those... ‘Are you in New York right now?’ kind of spur-of-the-moment, spontaneous evenings that you think are going to last a couple of hours and end up taking half the night," he added.

Wyle told PEOPLE that whenever the pair reunite to catch up, it's "always from the point where we last left each other."

"Those bonds that were forged during that show are so lovely and intimate that I feel like we don't have to be totally present in each other's lives to be able to have a context for each other's lives," he explained, referring to their time on the ER set all those years ago.

Reflecting on his friendship with the Good Night, and Good Luck star, Wyle added, "He's been a real touchstone figure in my life and one who seems to pop up with great regularity at the right moments."

The pair shared a special moment at the AARP event, presenting each other with their respective awards. Clooney won Best Actor in film for his titular role in Jay Kelly, and Wyle won the same award in the TV category for his performance as Dr. Michael Robinavitch in The Pitt.

Clooney recalled first meeting Wyle in 1993 while onstage to present his friend with his Best Actor award.

“He was wise beyond his years from the very beginning, from the very start,” the Wolfs actor recalled. “He was also the kindest person ever. We became very dear friends very early. We have remained that way for well over 30 years now.”

“I'm very proud to call him a friend. I'm also proud to call him a colleague," Clooney added, joking, "And when I grow up, I want to be Noah Wyle.”

When Wyle later walked the red carpet at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 11, he playfully declared to E! Live from the Red Carpet that Clooney's TV medical skills are no match for his own.

"I’m the better doctor,” Wyle said when host Zuri Hall asked who’s more qualified. “I’m the better doctor,” he repeated with a smile.
