Have *The Naked Gun* costars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson taken their chemistry from the big screen to real life?

"It's a budding romance in the early stages," a source close to their new comedy told PEOPLE, adding, "It's sincere, and it's clear they're smitten with each other."

The source added that the two are busy "enjoying each other's company," as they promote their film. This certainly seems to be the case — the two potential lovebirds have been seen playing up their flirtation at events for the film. On Tuesday at the *Today* show, Anderson and Neeson pretended to get caught making out on live TV as part of a bit. She also was papped planting a sweet kiss on Neeson's cheek on the red carpet at the London premiere on July 22.**

Reps for Paramount, Anderson, and Neeson did not immediately return **'s request for comment Tuesday.

The spoof-comedy reboot features Neeson as Los Angeles Police Squad detective Frank Drebin Jr. — son of the character made famous by Leslie Nielsen across three movies in the late '80s and early '90s — who investigates the death of a tech company programmer. Anderson plays the deceased's sister Beth, who is desperate for answers about how her brother died. In the process, she strikes up a romance with Frank much like the one between Nielsen and Priscilla Presley in the original trilogy.**

In EW's own *Naked Gun* cover story earlier this month, Neeson and Anderson took turns gushing about working with the other, with Anderson crediting her chemistry with Neeson as a reason why she landed the role.

For his part, Neeson said he wasn't sure what to expect from working with Anderson. "She embraced and embodied the silliness, the quirkiness, and the intensity — and a little sad quality in her, too, which was adorable," Neeson said. "She's got that feistiness and innate sense of humor… And very easy on the eyes, too."**

Anderson admitted she was "terrified" to first meet her costar, but he immediately made her "feel safe" and "feel free."

"I think I have a friend forever in Liam, and we definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving, and he's a good guy," Anderson added at the time. "He's a true artist. He comes from theater and *Schindler's List* and has done over a hundred films. And I did things inside out and backwards, came from television, and then my personal life kind of overshadowed my professional life. It is funny: We all come to this place in different ways, but to be able to share this experience with him is very meaningful and such an honor."

And, in May, she told EW that she and Neeson bonded over a mutual "love of literature and a good laugh," and that she often left baked goods she had made for him in his trailer. Anderson added, "We had many dinners out with the cast. I invited him and his assistant over for romantic dinners with me and my assistant so our relationship stayed 'professionally romantic' during filming."
