A year later, they stepped down from their roles as senior working royals in hopes of building their lives afresh away from the monarchy.

Robert Hardman, author of “Our Queen,” said that the late monarch always “adored Harry.” He also shared that she invited Markle to accompany her on a solo trip together, which the author claims was “a rare honour for new family members.” Not just that, she also gifted the “Suits” alum a pair of diamond and pearl drop earrings. Overall, she made efforts to make her feel part of the family.

However, soon after the wedding, tensions began to arise between the Sussexes and the Waleses. The author says that the Queen “recognised what a modernising force Harry was.” This is why she entrusted him with many important responsibilities. However, as things changed after his marriage, in January 2020, the Sussexes announced their departure from royal work. They stated that while they would be moving to America, they would still play a role in public life. However, this was the moment when the late Queen “acted decisively,” according to the author.

He said, “As far as the Queen was concerned, Harry and Meghan had everything handed to them but wanted to throw it all away… She was enormously upset and terribly sad about a wasted opportunity, but she acted decisively.” While Harry and Markle wanted a half-in, half-out role, the late Queen firmly said that would not be possible.
