Miami Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez made it through four innings of his start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Perez did not take the mound for the fifth inning, which was surprising because he had been pitching really well, striking out nine batters on 73 pitches through four.

It was announced in the press box later in the game that Perez had suffered a “right hamstring spasm.”

A replay of the injury showed Perez warming up for the inning with a pitching coach. All of a sudden, the pitcher looked like he had pulled or injured something while stretching and had to immediately sit down.

The broadcast then explained that Perez also needed help down the dugout stairs to go to the locker room and undergo testing.

He was replaced by Michael Peterson, who pitched only 0.2 innings and allowed one earned run on one hit, while walking two on 23 pitches.

The 23-year-old Perez has made 11 starts this season. He has a 3-6 record with a 4.91 ERA. His outing against Toronto on Wednesday looked like his best start to a game this season, with an impressive seven punchouts in four innings.

Perez is now considered day-to-day. The hope is that it is just a spasm and that he will be able to make his next start.
