He shared the news in an emotional tribute on Instagram on Saturday, Aug. 29

The rapper posted several photos of his mother and wrote, ā€œLOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt,ā€ in his tribute

Lil Nas X’s mother, Tameka Hill, has died, the Grammy-winning rapper and singer announced in an Instagram post.

ā€œRIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt. 🄹🄹,ā€ Nas, 27, wrote on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The post featured three photos: one of Hill looking at the camera, one of the mother and son together at an event, and a third of Hill with Nas as a child.

Hill’s age and cause of death are not known at this time. Representatives for the musician did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While Nas has not previously shared much about his relationship with his mother, he described her as an ā€œaddictā€ during a 2020 interview with Variety. and noted their relationship was strained.

ā€œShe’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love,ā€ her told the outlet.

The news of Hill’s passing comes just days after the ā€œOld Town Roadā€ rapper — who recently shared he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had entered rehab for mental health support — celebrated his ā€œ10,000th day alive.ā€

On Aug. 24, the musician posted a video on his Instagram Stories that featured a cake he had made in honor of the milestone.

ā€œSo, tomorrow is my 10,000th day alive and…I made it!ā€ he said with a smile. ā€œA lot of y’all won’t make it but I made it.ā€

Nas — whose real name is Montero Hill — returned to social media in June after nearly a year away, sharing an update on his personal mental health journey.

ā€œI’ve been in rehab for a few months and since then, I’ve been back at home whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends and what not, and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,ā€ he began in the June 17 video. ā€œI have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful when I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis.ā€

ā€œI feel like I had known for like the past few years but I didn’t want to admit to it because I didn’t want to have to take medication and have people think different of me... Black, gay, bipolar. I’m living life on like extreme hard mode,ā€ he said with a laugh. ā€œBut on a serious note, I’m doing much better. I’m doing better, I’m feeling better.
