Andrea Clulow and her husband, Darrell Clulow, visited The Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about their mission to teach kids about the value of sharks
They informed Clarkson that they had adopted a shark and named her "Kelly Clarkson"
"Yes!" Clarkson exclaimed, excited by the news
Kelly Clarkson learned that she has a namesake under the sea.
On The Kelly Clarkson Show episode that aired on Thursday, Jan. 15, the host welcomed former preschool teacher Andrea Clulow and her husband, Darrell Clulow.
The couple is on a mission to teach kids about the value of sharks in a new children's book, Finn & Friends, and through an organization with the same name.
"There's no denying sharks can be intimidating creatures, but they're also beautiful and a central part of our oceans," Clarkson began the segment.
When sharing the inspiration for the project, Andrea made a revelation that delighted the singer.
"I love sharks, and we had the opportunity last summer to go on a research expedition, and the first shark that we got to … help tag, we adopted, and her name is Kelly Sharkson," she said as an excited Clarkson exclaimed, "Yes!"
Andrea went on to explain that the couple wanted to encourage "empathy" for the marine animals after a shark attack off the coast of Australia made international news in 2022.
They were determined to develop a way to teach children that "sharks aren't monsters."
"I wrote a story about this shark and his ocean friends, and hopefully kids will read this story and relate to these animals and see them through empathy and not fear," she said of Finn & Friends.
"That's really clever," Clarkson commented.
Andrea noted that a portion of their book proceeds will support other organizations engaged in shark research, ocean conservation, and education.
As for their book, Darrell said they didn’t want kids to read it and then put it on a shelf.
“We wanted them to be inside the story, so we’ve made it interactive,” he said.

It includes games such as a word search and a blank page for kids to sketch their favorite sea animals. Children can also find coloring pages on their website.
“When a kid sits down, and they draw something that they love, they’re forming a connection,” he said. “They’re not just being lectured about conservation.”

He continued, “When a child finishes this book and feels inspired to get out and to explore, care about the ocean, imagines themselves maybe as a future marine biologist, or just sees sharks in a different way, that’s our goal.”
