Preparing looks for a press tour is no easy feat.

While promoting her latest film Song Sung Blue across the globe, Kate Hudson teamed up with Sophie Lopez, her stylist of 15 years.

The goal? To create looks that are "effortless, confident, and a little sexy," Lopez tells PEOPLE.

"Nothing ever feels overworked," the stylist explains. "It’s about ease, movement and letting her personality come through."

"I trust that not only does she intimately know my fashion sensibility, but that she pushes me as well, and because we are so close, it makes the process of dressing up and the choices that we make a fun and easy experience," Hudson tells PEOPLE of Lopez. "We both love fashion and find it one of the great artistic expressions, and we enjoy telling stories through clothes. I feel so lucky to have her as a friend and a collaborator."

The "deeply collaborative" process started early, Lopez says. "I began building a mood board in early October and collaborated closely with Kate from the outset. From there, it’s a long process of pulling, refining, fitting and editing, always staying flexible, because press schedules change and evolve and the best looks often reveal themselves closer to the moment."

From Valentino to Stella McCartney, the duo chose looks that align with Hudson's signature style while also nodding to her role in Song Sung Blue. In the movie musical, the actress stars alongside Hugh Jackman as half of the real-life couple Claire and Mike Sardina, who were part of the Milwaukee-based Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning & Thunder.

"We usually prepare multiple options and decide on the day, so sometimes a look doesn’t get worn immediately and instead finds its moment later in the tour," Lopez says.

"Style evolves as one evolves, as I have evolved, but there is always the classic foundation of what I love and how I like to express myself through clothes that always finds a thread, a continuous thread, through the years," Hudson says.

Lopez says the red beaded Georges Chakra gown Hudson wore to the Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards was a "subtle callback" to a key moment in Song Sung Blue.

"There’s always the presence of the character and what we’re celebrating and how we can celebrate Claire throughout the press tour, and then of course applying my own personal style and the things that I love," Hudson says.

Hudson's red Stella McCartney minidress wowed at the Critics Choice Awards. "Color was very intentional," Lopez explains. "It was inspired by Claire, Kate’s character in the film. Expressive, optimistic and emotionally open. The palette helped reflect that energy."
