Joe Manganiello has made it clear he would welcome a call from DC about bringing Deathstroke back to the big screen, and he says the studio knows exactly where to find a warrior. The actor is open to returning to the role, and he describes the original part as the greatest achievement of his life.

Joe Manganiello responds to questions about Deathstroke’s future

Asked about talk of Deathstroke returning to cinemas, Manganiello laughed before pointing to a reminder he keeps close at hand. “You know, I have that helmet from when I got to play him the first time sitting in my office, and I look at it every day, and it’s the it’s the greatest achievement of my life,” he said. The interviewer pressed him on whether that amounted to a yes. His answer left little room for doubt. “You know, it’s been to hell and back, and… you want a warrior, you know who to call,” he said.

The part means more to Manganiello than most. He was battling an undiagnosed autoimmune disease when he was cast as Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s Batman project, which was later scrapped. He credits that casting as his reason to keep fighting. Affleck had planned to direct and star in the standalone film before stepping away, and the project never reached cinemas. Manganiello later made a brief appearance as the character in the 2017 team-up film, but his bigger plans for Deathstroke never materialised. He has previously said several other projects featuring the villain were cancelled. The cancellation hit him hard, describing the experience as brutal heartbreak.

Joe Manganiello says he is now symptom-free. He discusses his health struggles and his career in his memoir, Bloodlines: A Memoir, which is out now. It also covers a life-saving organ amputation and a long search for answers that doctors could not give him.

As of now, DC has not confirmed any plans involving Manganiello in the role. Even so, his message to the studio is hard to miss. The helmet stays on his desk, the memory stays with him, and he is ready to answer if DC does call.
