Jessica Simpson recorded a new jingle for Chicken of the Sea with a nod to her Newlyweds gaffe
In the new ad for the brand, Simpson confuses "chicken" for "tuna" in the song's lyrics
Simpson famously asked her then-husband Nick Lachey “Is this chicken that I have, or is this fish?” during the 2003 premiere of their MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica
Jessica Simpson is still confusing chicken and tuna in a playful ad for Chicken of the Sea — but it turns out all she needs is a packet of the product to set her straight.
The actress, singer and fashion designer, 45, partnered with the brand to record a new version of its jingle from the 1960s, in honor of its new Frank’s RedHot flavor combo.
“Ask any mermaid you happen to see, what’s the best chicken?” she croons in the video, before realizing she has the lyrics wrong.
“Wait, that’s not right,” she admits, before removing her headphones in the studio. “I’m too hungry for this. Can we take a break?”
The ad then cuts to Simpson eating from one of Chicken of the Sea’s portable packets, which she says keep her going on busy days.
Simpson then sings the jingle once again, this time correcting the line to “What’s the best tuna? Chicken of the Sea.”
“Working with Chicken of the Sea again to launch a new version of their iconic jingle was a true honor,” Simpson tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I have been a fan of this brand for over 25 years, and I love their portable tuna packets (including their newest packet with Frank’s RedHot!) — it's such a healthy, easy and yummy snack to grab on the go.”
More than two decades ago, Simpson famously asked her then-husband Nick Lachey “Is this chicken that I have, or is this fish?” during the 2003 premiere of their MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.
“I'm all about nostalgia,” Simpson told PEOPLE at an N.Y.C. event premiering the jingle on Tuesday, Jan. 13. “That moment was a very real conversation that … it just became bigger than me. I'm a very literal person, so I think of things in a very literal way, and I literally had a question that went viral and still goes viral.”
Newlyweds ran for three seasons. Lachey and Simpson split soon after the show ended in 2005, officially divorcing in 2006.
Simpson married Eric Johnson in July 2014 and the two welcomed three children, Maxwell "Maxi" Drew, 13, Ace Knute, 12, and Birdie Mae, 6. Simpson and Johnson announced their separation in January after 10 years of marriage.
The Open Book author has previously poked fun at the tuna gaffe.
In 2024, she and daughter Maxwell appeared together in another spot for Chicken of the Sea.
The ad sees the mother-daughter duo sitting on a couch. "Mom, what are you eating in the packet," Maxwell asks.
"It's called Chicken of the Sea, but it's not really chicken — it's tuna," Simpson responds. "So don't get confused by it."
Maxwell wants to know, "Who would get confused by that?"
Simpson replies, "No one. Not your mom.”
While speaking at the jingle premiere, Simpson said getting to share the moment with Maxwell was “so fun.”
“Having my daughter there, it was just so beautiful,” she added.
