Jeopardy! is celebrating Johnny Gilbert’s birthday

The game show’s longtime announcer turned 98

Jeopardy! is celebrating one of its legends, Johnny Gilbert.

The longtime announcer, who began his tenure on the game show in 1984 alongside late host Alex Trebek, received a special shoutout from the show on Monday, July 13, in honor of his 98th birthday.

“A very happy birthday to our legendary announcer, Johnny Gilbert 🥳🎂,” the official Jeopardy! Instagram page shared in an Instagram caption.

The post itself featured a handful of images from Gilbert’s run on the game show — some from the early years and one of him alongside Trebek, who died in November 2020. Quite a few Jeopardy! alums also celebrated Gilbert’s big day in the comments section.

“One of the best parts of Jeopardy! is hearing his voice,” wrote one former contestant. “The very best is hearing him introduce you by name as a contestant!”

Another commented, “One of my great bragging rights in life is that I know what it sounds like to have Johnny Gilbert announce my name.”

Gilbert’s voice has been a staple on the show since the beginning, as he announces the signature “This is Jeopardy!” at the start of each episode. Mike Richards, the show’s executive producer, told 13 News Now in 2021 that Gilbert “has a voice and even more importantly, delivery, unlike anyone else.”

“Johnny will be the announcer of Jeopardy! as long as he would like to be the announcer of Jeopardy!” Richards said at the time. “I have told him that, and it’s just how he is, humble. He’s never taken the job for granted.”
