Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie can't help but get emotional when reflecting on Cathy and Heathcliff's final moments together in *Wuthering Heights*. **

The actors, who play the ill-fated soulmates at the heart of Emerald Fennell's reimagining of the Gothic classic, tell * *that they were deeply moved by the devastating events that follow Cathy's decision to call off her illicit affair with Heathcliff. **

Following their split, the pregnant Cathy experiences a severe physical and mental breakdown that leads to the loss of her and Edgar Linton's (Shazad Latif) child — a major deviation from the book. Her maid, Nelly (Hong Chau), initially dismisses Cathy's descent into madness as melodramatic, not realizing that she's genuinely ill until it's too late. **

"There's quite a few moments of Cathy hallucinating, and she hallucinates seeing young Heathcliff in the garden," recalls Robbie, who also serves as a producer on the film. "I really liked all that stuff, because it was a pretty big section of the book, too. Where Cathy's sick, and she's going to die, and she's hallucinating, and she starts collecting all the bird feathers and going kind of crazy. So I liked that there was that section."

There is one hallucination, though, that has stuck with the actress. **

“What breaks my heart is when I was sitting on the bed, and little Heathcliff put his hand around Cathy’s ankle,” she says. “And it’s reminiscent of the early shot in the movie when they’re kids. Like that, honestly, almost makes me cry even [now].”

“In the screenplay, that was devastating,” Elordi adds. **

“Devastating,” Robbie agrees. “The little hand holding her ankle!”

Cathy ultimately dies of sepsis in the film, with Heathcliff unaware that she'd fallen ill until after her death. Their tragic final scene together sees a tearful Heathcliff holding onto Cathy's body and begging her to haunt him for the rest of his days. **

"I mean, it's gut-wrenching, that moment," Robbie says.

Elordi notes that Heathcliff's love for Cathy endures even after her demise.

"I think the book, the sort of love that it's talking about, exists outside of life and death," he explains. "I think in playing those sequences, any scene where I'm with Cathy — for Heathcliff — is real, whether it's spiritual or physical. It doesn't really alter the intention of how you play [the moment], because in some world, their spirits are together afterward."

He continues, "The book, obviously, continues on, but [the film] kind of leaves it open that their souls are, for me, sort of forever intertwined when you get to see them in that liminal space together."
