A Florida man is recalling the heartbreaking moment his wife of 10 years was killed as Hurricane Isaias brought unforgiving winds to their neighborhood.
As the Category 2 storm made its way along the Gulf Coast on the evening of Friday, Oct. 9, Joey Williams said that his beloved wife, Jenn Biggs Williams, was fatally crushed by a tree that fell through the roof and into the living room of their Pensacola home.
“I was able to squeeze out. My wife didn’t make it,” he told NewsNation, noting that the incident occurred just moments after they went outside to take pictures of the sky and the damage left in the neighborhood. “The tree just fell on her and it was … we like to think it was pretty instant, you know? I mean, just gone. Gone.”
After he crawled out from under the tree himself, Joey recalled calling out for his wife and hearing nothing in return.
“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said through tears. “Freak accidents are gonna happen, I guess. That’s what they say, right? Well, try dealing with one and the aftermath that comes with it.”
“I just want to hear her voice,” he continued. “I’ve called her phone five times just to tell her I love her … she was my world.”

Although the tree fell around 7 p.m. on Friday, Joey told NewsNation that first responders weren’t able to help until approximately 3 a.m. the next morning due to the intensity of the storm.
“They let me say bye to her,” he said. “I watched the love of my life for 10 years go into the back of a coroner’s van and head down that road. That’s the hardest thing I ever swallowed in my life.”

“Everybody loved her, even her co-workers,” he added. “She was the ultra-nice badass person.”
Following her death, Jenn’s stepson, Ian Williams, told CBS affiliate WKRG that his father woke up to see the horrific scene in front of him after being knocked unconscious.
“My dad was sitting in his recliner and it knocked him out for a little bit,” he said. “He’s like, ‘I’m in shock right now. I don’t know what to do.’ He said his knees were busted.”
Neighbors have since joined the family in working to saw down the rest of the tree on top of the family’s home.
“It’s going to be a big process,” Ian emphasized. “Overcoming it in our minds and just cleaning everything up in the midst of what has happened.”
