Duke vs. Georgia Tech: 5 keys to the Blue Devils, Yellow Jackets matchup

The undefeated Duke Blue Devils return from a bye this week and look to go 5-0 for the second time in the Manny Diaz era. Here are my five keys to Duke’s game against the 1-3 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

What are the fruits of the bye week self-scout?

Duke’s coaching staff used its off week to compile its annual bye week self-scout. Diaz said the value of the exercise helps the Blue Devils understand how they're perceived by the teams they're preparing to face.

ā€œWhat happens is on both sides of the ball, you devote all your attention to Georgia Tech, right? And you’re just watching them, and you’re watching them, and you don’t realize what they’re watching,ā€ Diaz said.

With Duke firing on all cylinders before the bye, it’ll be intriguing to see what this team looks like after the self-scout.

Can anyone stop Nate Sheppard?

Duke’s bell cow has been on an absolute tear in 2026 and hasn’t shown signs of stopping. The sophomore has the third-most rushing yards in the FBS even after the bye week, and averages 7.1 yards per carry so far.

If he continues to play at this level that’s got him receiving Heisman Trophy buzz, it’ll be hard to see the Blue Devils losing Saturday.

And luckily for Duke, Georgia Tech ranks 123rd in the country in rush defense with 189 rush yards allowed per game. Unless the Jackets turn things around in a hurry, Sheppard and the Blue Devils could have a field day.

Penalties

While vibes have been mostly positive for this undefeated Duke team, the Blue Devils continue to show one major weakness: penalties. Duke averages 76.3 penalty yards per game, good for 124th in the country.

Fortunately for the Blue Devils, Georgia Tech isn’t much better in this department. The Yellow Jackets average 65 penalty yards per game, which is 99th in FBS.

Penalties have hurt Duke throughout the season, but they haven’t killed the Blue Devils yet. This could completely change, however, as ACC competition starts to ramp up.

Georgia Tech's health

The Yellow Jackets were also on a bye last week, which is massive for the program’s overall health. During its game against Stanford two weeks ago, Georgia Tech was without 17 players, including five starters.

Starting cornerback Daiquan White was also banged up during the team’s last game, stretching the team’s depth even further. The offensive line was also torn to shreds as the group trotted out four backups two weeks ago.

We’ll get a good look at how big this storyline will end up being Wednesday night when the ACC availability report comes out.

Third down

Georgia Tech ranked 103rd in FBS in third down efficiency, converting on 34.5% of attempts. This plays right into Duke’s hands, as the Blue Devils ranked eighth in the country as a third-down defense.

Unless the Yellow Jackets show vast improvement in this area, a major category of the game will lean heavily in Duke’s favor.
