Will feelings get in the way of The Voice competition?

On Monday, Oct. 12, coach Riley Green paired Caroline Alexis and Everett Bounds to go head-to-head in the Battles. The awkward part? They’re dating.

ā€œWe were getting to know each other even before we got paired up,ā€ Bounds, 23, told his fellow contestants before the performance. ā€œIt doesn’t even feel like a battle, just more of, how can we tell the story together?ā€

In a confessional, Bounds said he ā€œcouldn’t have been happierā€ to be paired with Alexis, 25.

ā€œBefore the blind auditions, we met backstage, and he actually brought me flowers. I was completely surprised. We had not had a whole lot of conversations at that point but it was so sweet and he wrote me a little hand-written note and asked me to dinner,ā€ Alexis said in her confessional.

Bounds added, ā€œWhen I first saw Caroline, I thought, ā€˜Holy moly.’ She’s just so beautiful. Caroline’s definitely the kind of girl I would love to have as my girlfriend.ā€

Then, Alexis revealed that they had gone on ā€œa couple datesā€ but she wanted to ā€œtake things slow and keep getting to know each other.ā€

ā€œHe definitely has a lot of qualities that I respect as a person. He is very uplifting and supportive and that’s something that’s good to have as a person and as a battle partner,ā€ she said.

With some help from his advisor Carly Pearce, Green, 37, helped Bounds and Alexis prepare for their duet of ā€œLouisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.ā€ During the rehearsals, Bounds said flirting with Alexis was ā€œsecond natureā€ because he does it ā€œevery day.ā€

Moments before the performance, Alexis said it was an ā€œinteresting situation not a lot of people find themselves inā€ and ā€œwe’ll see what happens between us afterwards.ā€

ā€œHe picks on me all the time, he says, ā€˜You better still answer my phone calls Bama,ā€™ā€ she said.

Afterward, the coaches complimented the duo for how ā€œfunā€ the performance was. Meanwhile, Green said it was ā€œthe first time this has felt like home to me.ā€

ā€œIt’s more about a performance and Caroline you really laid into it,ā€ he said. ā€œThat attitude, it was sassy and country and everything I love about country music and Alabama. It was awesome.ā€

ā€œEverett, you did all the stuff I thought you were going to do. You got the look, you got the attitude up there. You cut up, you don’t take yourself too seriously and that’s what the song is about. It’s about having fun and you did a great job,ā€ the ā€œJesus Savesā€ singer said.

Ultimately, Green chose Bounds to continue in the competition because he’s ā€œso natural.ā€

ā€œEverett was a one chair turn and I think that people are realizing now that he’s a talented guy and that he can do a lot of other things so I’m excited that we’re kind of showing him that,ā€ he concluded.

The Battles will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 13 on NBC.
