Colin Farrell exclusively told PEOPLE he's open to returning for additional seasons of The Penguin, but only under one important condition

The actor said any discussions about future seasons will likely wait until work on the next Batman film is further along

Farrell also opened up about returning for season 2 of the Apple TV Sugar, admitting he was nervous to revisit his character

Colin Farrell revealed he's not opposed to reprising his titular rolein the hit HBO series The Penguin — but it would have to be on one key condition.

Farrell, 50, caught up with PEOPLE at the season 2 premiere of his Apple TV show Sugarat the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles on June 17. During the conversation, the actor shared that he "absolutely" thinks "there's a potential to explore more" when it comes to The Penguin.

"Should we? Can we get there? Could we justify a second or a third season when the first season was as strong as it was?" he continued.

"They're the conversations that we still need to have," he added.

The star, who is confirmed to appear in the next Batman movie, went on to say that a second season likely won't seriously be explored until the movie gets underway.

"The powers that be are working very hard on bringing Batman to life now — the second film, so there's no time to get into [another season of ThePenguin]," Farrell explained.

"But maybe when the shooting on that is completed, maybe we'll start thinking about a second and third season of Penguin. But it would have to justify itself. It'd have to be amazing because [showrunner] Lauren LeFranc and her team did such an extraordinary job in the first season," he continued.

The first season of The Penguin, a gritty crime drama, followed Farrell's Oz Cobb as he battled rivals for control of Gotham's criminal empire. It earned widespread acclaim, and Farrell won a 2025 Golden Globe for his performance.

Farrell also dished on his most recent role in season 2 of Sugar, in which the actor reprises the character of private investigator John Sugar. When asked how he felt about stepping back into the role, the actor admitted he had been anxious.

"[I'm] always nervous going to work, regardless of the job, because you've no idea what you're doing, and because you've never done it before. Because each job is unique …  a different story, different characters," he said.

"Even though there are certain things you get used to ….  like working with a crew, that are familiar over the years, there is a rawness that's offered by each gig being unique. But the trick with this one was it was the first time I went back into [a role I played previously]," he added.

"I mean, I did Penguinafter playing Penguin in The Batman film. But in The Batman film, I only had five scenes, so I hadn't really landed in something," Farrell added.

"I got to learn really about the Penguin more in doing the show than I did ever in the film. But with this [Sugar], I got to play a character that I felt fairly comfortable with in the first season, halfway through the season, and I felt I knew him," he added.

"And so yeah, to go back into it, I was a little nervous," the actor said.

"But it's such a lovely-hearted character and really, in many ways, a really simple character. A man of, I suppose, uncommon kindness and empathy, and yet also still very much somebody who can take care of himself," Farrell continued. "It was lovely. I loved it. I would do this every year if I could."
