A respected Southern California chef died this week.

Rainer Schwarz, the executive chef and partner at Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck on Laguna Beach, died in a solo car collision in Dana Point on Monday, April 6, according to the Los Angeles Times and the Orange County Register.

Per both outlets, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said Schwarz was driving on Crown Valley Parkway near Pacific Coast Highway shortly before 5 p.m. when his Audi veered off the road, moved through a landscaped area, and came to rest in a parking lot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:50 p.m. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident.

PEOPLE reached out to the Sheriff’s Department for more information, but did not immediately hear back.

A joint Facebook post by Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck said the establishments were “deeply saddened” by the loss of Schwarz, who was 59.

“More than a remarkable culinary talent, he brought together a rich cultural heritage and world-class experience to create unforgettable dining experiences for all who walked through our doors,” the post said.

Schwarz was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, and started his culinary career at the age of 15.

He went on to hone his talent in Switzerland, then following Chef Joachim Splichal to California to work at Los Angeles’ Patina and Pinot.

His journey in the food world continued, as he opened Cienega at L’Ermitage, and worked with restaurateur John Nye on Disney’s Mondavi Project in the late 1990s, before moving on to Colorado’s Vail Cascade Resort & Spa.

Schwarz’s long resume also includes time at The Viceroy Santa Monica and Public Kitchen & Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, after he returned to California in 2009.

In 2013, he and Nye launched Sentinel Restaurant and Hospitality Group, which owns and operates The Deck and Driftwood Kitchen.

“Chef Rainer’s philosophy centered on simplicity — letting the finest seasonal ingredients speak for themselves — while delivering the precision and excellence that defined his career,” the post continued.

It also noted that he was dedicated to his community, supporting nonprofit events and promoting collaboration and mentorship with other chefs, and that he is survived by a wife, Tasha, and a son, Max.

“Chef Rainer’s legacy lives on in every dish and every guest experience he shaped. He believed deeply in hospitality as a way to bring people together. We are profoundly grateful for his lasting impact and will continue to honor his vision in all we do,” the message concluded.
