Benny Blanco clarified exactly when he started secretly dating Selena Gomez in a new interview.
The music producer revealed that the couple kept their relationship under wraps for “a long time.”
Blanco also opened up about the conversation that he had with Gomez before taking their romance public.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are counting down to their first wedding anniversary after their fairytale nuptials last September, but the start of their romance wasn’t so idyllic. In a new interview published on July 13, Blanco revealed when he first started secretly dating Gomez—and the timeline is much earlier than previously thought.

Chatting with Spanish publication El País, the Grammy-nominated songwriter opened up about how the “Lose You to Love Me” singer’s intense fame and public scrutiny from fans impacted the beginnings of their love story. Blanco recalled, “We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months”—revealing that the collaborators’ friendly dynamic turned romantic before most fans suspected that there was anything going on.
Blanco also recalled a make-or-break conversation with Gomez before they announced their romance to the world, revealing that the former Disney star gave him an out due to her celebrity.

“And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends,’” he recounted. “And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”

The couple first sparked romance rumors in July 2023 when Gomez posted a photo of her arms around Paris Hilton and Blanco in a 31st birthday party photo dump. She later hard-launched her relationship that same December. In response to a celebrity news account that speculated about her relationship status, the star simply wrote “Facts.” Shortly after, she shared a black-and-white photo of the couple kissing.

Nowadays, Blanco said he’s learned to balance his desire for privacy with the attention that his wife gets. “I don’t like to expose my life,” he explained. “Famous people are under constant scrutiny: if you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say another, it’s also wrong. I’d like to have more privacy.”
“Maybe I’ll occasionally post a picture of my wife or some delicious dish I’ve tried, but I hardly ever post anything on my Instagram that isn’t work-related,” he added. However, Blanco revealed that his mindset about fame has changed since dating Gomez, explaining, “She’s been dealing with this her whole life. So it’s something we have to face together.”
